What Makes a Home?

I was invited by the Volcano Theatre Company to photo-document a fascinating project involving Coastal Housing (Swansea) tenants who were teamed-up with artists to interpret What Makes a Home? for the participants. The venue was a vast corner plot, glazed-fronted store on the corner of College Street and High Street in Swansea (figs#1 & 2). The brief for the artists was to interpret their respective participant’s idea of What Makes a Home for them, into the physical area allotted toRead more

Gordon

Gordon is an octogenarian gentleman who has lived and worked in Burry Port all his life. He was born in a two-bedroomed terrace house, which he shared with his parents and grandparents. In 1939, aged five, he moved with his parents, into a three-bedroomed council house on the same street and attended the Copperworks School in Morlan Terrace in an adjacent street. Gordon impressed me as a very smart and presentable man with a very well tended garden and tidyRead more

Swansea High Street

It’s been on my mind for a few years to create an Flâneur on Swansea’s High street. I wanted to record the amazing architecture that is only just hanging-on and to photo-document the rapid change to the shop fronts as the sad, neglected heritage buildings are torn down to build something new and transient. (fig.#1) My friend Sarah-Jane was holding her MA exhibition at 211 High Street, so it seemed appropriate to combine a visit to her show with myRead more

Our ‘Communities’ Exhibition

It was a full-on and exhausting day for all of us, but so rewarding and I am delighted to be part of this group; we all helped, encouraged and supported each other. Each of us produced a unique display for our photographs; for example, Anna manufactured a light-box with acetate images of her subjects, a group of actors and Philip created a light-tight, tent-like enclosure to display photos of his role-play characters. We all chose an induvial approachRead more

Bauta Exhibition

As the day of our ‘Communities’ exhibition draws near we are all busy with the final preparation of our six individual photographic projects for our University assignment. My friend Tim Swain has given me access to his recently opened art gallery in Burry Port, ‘Studio 46’. This has enabled me to assembly the Medieval rope bed I manufactured to display my exhibition photographs and prepare a sequenced layout of my prints. The subjects for my project have been the CardiffRead more

Cardiff Castle Garrison

The class I’m in at the University of South Wales (USW) where I’m studying Documentary Photography has been tasked with creating individual bodies of work on the subject of ‘Communities’. As a group we have adopted the name Bauta to describe our project as we are documenting Role Play communities. We are diligently producing work for an exhibition scheduled for 16th December at the YMCA in Cardiff. For my group I have selected the Cardiff Castle Garrison; this group is aRead more

Llandyfaelog 111th Agricultural Show, 2016

The Llandyfaelog Agricultural & Horticultural Society held their 111th show at the Ffos Las Racecourse on Saturday 10th September. Kidwelly dragon

Kidwelly dragon The dragon that had set-up residency in Caerphilly castle has now settled in Kidwelly castle for a break on his way to Harlech Castle before winter hibernation. Rumour has it that he will be staying in Kidwelly Castle until 15th September before flying north to Harlech. The dragon (not sure if he has a name) appears to be reasonably friendly as, during my time in Kidwelly, appeared not to eat any small children, in fact the children seemedRead more

Narberth Flâneur

Narberth Flâneur I arranged to conduct my inaugural Flâneur in Narberth, Pembrokeshire by contacting the Mayor, Elizabeth Rogers to gain her support for my project. The term Flâneur describes a ‘stroller’ of 19th century France, an ‘urban explorer’ or ‘connoisseur of the street’; applied to a photographer it’s similar to a street photographer who has no particular purpose or objective and spends several hours exploring and recording the sights and events of a town or city. I spent five enjoyableRead more
