It’s My Shout – ‘Veg’

I was invited by the Production Manager of It’s My Shout to provide the Stills and Behind The Scenes (BTS) photographs for an up-coming film called ‘Veg’. I was sent copies of the Shooting Schedule, Call Sheet, Locations details, and a filming Risk Assessment. I was also sent a brief about the film which ‘is a comedy about a man who is obsessed with a vegetable growing competition’. This well-considered and detailed information not only enabled me to feel a part of a very professional film studio, but also to create my own visualisation of the unfolding scenes and possible BTS opportunities. This imagining is of immense importance to me in organising my camera equipment and creating a thoughtful storyboard of imagined scenes.

‘Veg’ is the third film I have completed with It’s My Shout; my previous two have been:

Working with It’s My Shout has been a realisation of an ambition that I’ve held for many years; to seek opportunities to produce film Stills, and I am very grateful to have been selected for these three films.

I enjoy the challenge of seeking photo opportunities during the non-filming periods of the three-day-shoot; to pursue the nuances of the activities of the crew and cast, to capture those moments of unpreparedness that represents the essence of the film’s energy and the commitment of the cast, crew and Supporting Artists.

When I am on-set, I am aware that I am by far the oldest member of the team; this I feel, places me in a unique position of not seeking a career in the film industry, but that of an observer. The raison d’etre on the web site of It’s My Shout is as follows:

‘It’s My Shout is a Welsh-based independent film production company dedicated to discovering and nurturing new talent in the film and television industry. Founded in 2002, we offer hands-on experience across various aspects of filmmaking, including acting, directing, screenwriting, camera work, sound, design, and post-production.

Each year, we produce a number of short films, both dramas and documentaries, in collaboration with our broadcast partners, BBC Wales and S4C, providing participants with the opportunity to work alongside industry professionals and gain practical skills’.

I am aware that the majority of the eager burgeoning film talent is of the younger persuasion; this fact enables me, as an ‘oldie’, to stand-back as a spectator, to witness and enjoy the enthusiastic energy of the wanna-be future film production professionals.

It’s an absolute privilege to be immersed in this creative process and I hope to be invited to partake in a future film production to provide the Stills and BTS photographs for It’s My Shout.

Over the three days of the film-shoot I took 899 photographs, which I have reviewed, edited and selected for this PhotoEssay. The photos have been categorised into each day’s shoot, plus scenes in the Murton Farm greenhouse, and a selection of portraits.
