Debra John – Coal Out, Copper Home

Synopsis:

The stories of five ships and their voyages across the Atlantic ocean during the 19th century; from Swansea to Cape Horn, and from New York to San Francisco.

Debra gave a stella performance to a captivated audience of more than 100 Burry Port residents. The capacious hall of the Jerusalem Vestry paid host to Debra’s enchanting story of the men, and a woman, who risked their lives trading goods across the Atlantic ocean.

Debra transfixed her audience with tales of the ship owners and captains and the struggles of sailing the high seas during the 19th century. She stressed the importance of insurance for the cargoes and the daily hazards facing the crews, presented by the weather, the oceans and the risks of capsizing and shipwreck.

With her storytelling skills, Debra effortlessly created a captivating narrative featuring the ship’s boy and his determination to retrieve the first mate’s hat from the sea. She competently conveyed very human and personal accounts with her presentation.

Debra succeeded in creating a real-life drama from our past and engage her audience with her interpretation of our maritime history.

On completion of her presentation Debra invited questions from the audience, and it was evident that she had conveyed her story adeptly judging by the pertinent questions.

The Pembrey and Burry Port Industrial & Maritime Heritage Project organised this  charismatic presentation by Debra, and hopefully Debra will return with another of her characters from her repertoire of 18 personalities.
