The Llandyfaelog Agricultural & Horticultural Society held their 111^th show at the Ffos Las Racecourse on Saturday 10^th September. The Society produce an impressive and extensive show guide, which details all the classes of entry for the various livestock as well as details of entry into the photography, craft, flowers etc. and all those other classes usually judged at agricultural shows. The guide lists past officers dating back to 1981 and a photograph taken at the show in 1968.

I’ve always enjoyed attending agricultural shows and I can remember as a young teenager making regular visits to the Guildford Cattle Market and latterly to the Taunton Cattle Market before it closed in 2008.  Although I’ve had no experience in farming I’ve always appreciated where my food comes from and the efforts and livelihoods of farmers. The care and effort that farmers invest in their show animals is very impressive and to see the young equestrians displaying their skills is always very uplifting.

I am very interested in social history and seeing that the Llandyfaelog Agricultural & Horticultural Society has held 111 shows is immensely impressive and I am eager to learn more about its history and to view any archive photographs and discover how they functioned during the World Wars. I sent the current Society Secretary an email enquiring about the possibility of including some of their archive photos in my blog, but I received no response. I subsequently telephone her to make a direct enquiry, she said someone would ‘phone me to hopefully provide what I was asking for; but no-one has telephoned me. It’s very disappointing as there must be such a rich history of heritage in archive photos and memorabilia.
